Code club is for students wanting to tackle hard programming challenges efficiently. Some will want practice their skills and compete in the British Informatics Olympiad (BIO) which takes place in December. To achieve high marks in the BIO you need to be able to produce efficient coded solutions to hard programming challenges within tight time contraints. That is what we practice in Code Club.

The programming language we use is C++ for the simple reasons that:

  • it often facilitates neat solutions to this type of problem, and
  • students that make it through to the second stage of the BIO will need to use C++ .

Starting in January we ensure that everyone is confident to create, and test a program in C++. Then we move onto a monthly routine: students tackle a set of coding challenges and hand them in each month. Then we go through model answers the following month.

Challenges and other programming exercises are set appropriate to school sections, although this remains flexible. Students who demonstrate efficiency and competence above their age are moved on before time.
